The DGT launches "black radars": they will fine you €200 if you travel with more occupants than allowed.

The DGT launches "black radars": they will fine you €200 if you travel with more occupants than allowed.

In Spain, according to data from the Coyote Radar Observatory , a total of 3,395 active speedometers are installed to ensure driver safety and simultaneously catch speed limiters.

However, thanks to technological advances, radars have recently been installed to monitor other types of driving violations, such as seatbelt use, mobile phone use, and monitoring of passengers inside the vehicle, among others.

What are 'black radars'?

Specifically, in the following lines, we will discuss the so-called "black radars," as they are known in France, which will be responsible for monitoring the number of people traveling inside vehicles in a given area.

In our country, they're called "HOV bus lane monitoring radars." What's their purpose? Well, they're cameras that will detect the number of occupants in each vehicle at all times, and they'll have a system that will allow drivers to be fined if they're alone inside the vehicle.

It's important to remember that not everyone will be able to use the HOV lane; only those who meet a series of requirements, including the number of occupants. Two or more people will need to travel inside the lane to use this additional lane, whose main objective is to provide "flow to traffic."

How accurate are these radars?

These lanes, in addition to being reserved for vehicles with two or more passengers, may be used by emergency or heavy vehicles , public transport, or cars with ECO, C, and B labels, provided that "it is expressly indicated on the variable access panels to the lane," according to RACE .

It should be noted that, thanks to technology and Artificial Intelligence, these devices have a surprising success rate of over 95% , which means that almost no driver will escape the violation if they commit this offense behind the wheel and will have to pay a 200 euro fine .
